Desuvis: Creation

They opened their eyes for the first time and beheld the darkness surrounding them. The first trickle of self-awareness wormed its way through the creature now occupying the endless void.

“Who am I?”

Voicing the query startled them, for they had never perceived sound. Their thoughts gathered into a name and they hesitantly tested their new-found voice.

“I am Salaris, but what am I?”

New perceptions flooded their senses as a brilliant light burst forth from the darkness. Their form shied away, contracting to shield them from the overwhelming onslaught. Slowly, whether by moments or millennia, they adjusted to the new information the light revealed. They considered the new sensation as they perceived themselves for the first time.

Ethereal wisps swirled lazily through the blackness, slowly coalescing to create a fluid but cohesive form under their careful direction. She was Salaris the Dreamer. Were there other dreamers like her?

She considered the light before her. Could it be another? As the thought manifested, so too did gossamer wings to carry her toward her target.

How long did she soar? How far? She had no means to measure, but she continued toward her goal until she reached another ethereal form in the void. Now she was perceiving something new. Not something from without, but something within.

Excitement, curiosity, and trepidation churned within her as she fought to quiet her thoughts, but determination pushed her forward. She gently asked, “Are we the same?”

In a searing flash, a figure began to form around the light, and she was suddenly no longer alone. The new form regarded her warily for some time, but Salaris was patient. She waited quietly as the figure adjusted to the newness of existence. They glowed from the light within, and as they moved around her in contemplation, small motes of softly twinkling light drifted from their form and into the void. She watched some of them find purchase in the unfathomable distance, while others collided into bright flashes of creation. Some flickered and vanished, and some danced in pairs. Salaris watched it all with the wonder only new life can contain.

The figure straightened before her.

“I am Rosette the Radiant,” and so he was.
